Setti Kidane is a black femme photographer from Toronto. Her work focuses on storytelling, vulnerability, intimacy, embodiment, and blackness. Drawing from her black femme community, Setti invites us to view black women as multidimensional people.  Our layers are not ironic or contradictory; rather they speak to the diversity of our community. We can be happy and funny, as well as sad and anxious, and sometimes simultaneously so.  Setti’s adoration of black women inspires her to hold space for them in her artistic work. She wants to see them celebrated and appreciated for all that they do.

She also specializes in event photography and portraiture. Take a look at those images at: settikidane.com

The 12 Months of Melanin calendar is a celebration of black women. It features black female artists living in Melbourne, New York, and Toronto. These artists are singers, actors, writers, and poets. The 12 Months of Melanin is a platform for black women to tell their stories and to be recognized for their work.

Since black women are largely represented as one-dimensional, we are taking it upon ourselves to create content that truly reflects the communities that we belong to. We value the entire spectrum of black women and will continue shooting portraits for the series to reflect our community. We are celebrating our many layers, experiences, passions, insecurities, and bodies. Black women do not need to be 'easy', respectable, or strong, to be loved and appreciated. We value because we exist.
